TIPS ON GARBAGE PICKUP FOR THE CITY OF JOLIET:
For environmentally safe disposal of your refuse, keep in mind these guidelines for your solid waste service.

REMEMBER…All items must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection.

Refuse Services: All household refuse will be removed once per week from the curb or alley. Garbage may be placed in either 45-gallon cans or bags (32-gallon cans or bags are recommended). Please have all materials at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your pickup day as pickup times may vary. Residents may also rent or purchase 96-gallon containers by calling Waste Management. Non-standard containers such as plastic drums and other homemade containers will not be accepted.

Multi-family Units: Multi-family units and apartment buildings of four (4) units or fewer must either rent or purchase 96-gallon containers in order to receive curbside refuse collection service. Multi-family units may receive additional pickups or services for a charge. Please call our Customer Service Department at (815) 280-7854 for pricing options. The containers are $105.00 to purchase and/or $6.00 per month to rent. Large Items: Large household items such as discarded furniture, beds, tables, automotive tires, etc. will be collected on the regular pickup day. Please cut carpeting and padding into 4 foot rolled sections weighing no more than 50 pounds each.

Restricted Items: Materials such as earthen fill, boulders, rock and other materials normally handled in construction operations, and large truck tires are NOT subject to weekly collection. Also materials resulting from floods, fire or evacuation are not subject to collection.

Recycling Services: Recycling will be provided on a weekly basis on the regular service day. One (1) 18-gallon bin will be provided to all newly constructed homes. See the reverse side for a list of recyclable items and preparation tips. Extra recycling bins are available for $10.00 each at our Rockdale office.

The City of Joliet also provides two recycling centers located at 818 E. Cass Street and 1203 Cedarwood Drive. The Centers are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

White Goods: ARE DEFINED BY THE ILLINOIS E.P.A. AS: refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, freezers, air conditions, humidifiers, stoves, clothes dryers, dehumidifiers, ovens, dishwashers, water coolers, heat pumps, chillers, furnaces, and boilers will be picked up on the normal service day.

Yard Waste: Yard waste is collected from April through the first week of December. Yard waste materials consists of grass and shrubbery cuttings, leaves, tree limbs, and other materials accumulated as the result of care of lawns, shrubbery, vines, and trees. Yard waste should be placed at the curb or alley at the same time as refuse and recycling (7:00 a.m.). Yard waste must be placed in either 30 gallon kraft paper bags or a rigid container no greater than 32-gallons. Non-standard containers such as drums, baskets, etc. will not be collected. PLEASE CLEARLY MARK YOUR DESIGNATED YARD WASTE CONTAINERS SO THAT IT IS VISIBLE FROM THE STREET. Yard waste labels are available at the following locations: City Hall, Jewel Foods, Cub Foods, Dominick’s, and Eagle Food Stores.

Brush, tree limbs, and branches must be bound in bundles not exceeding 4 feet and weighing no more than 60 pounds. No single piece within each bundle should exceed three inches in diameter. Unbundled brush will not be collected.

Remodeling? Waste Management can provide 10, 15, 20, or 30 cubic yard containers for your home improvement project. Call our customer service department at 800-796-9696 or 815-280-7854 for a quote.

Hazardous Waste/Medical Products/Latex Paint Cans: Toxic products such as automotive batteries, oil base paints, insecticides, oil, anti-freeze, etc. cannot be collected through your residential pickup. For tips on where to dispose of these, contact the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency at (217) 782-9285 or call the Will County Waste Services Division at (815) 727-8834. Syringes used for home medical purposes may only be disposed of in rigid plastic containers. “Sharps” containers designed for syringe disposal can be obtained through your local pharmacy. Latex paint cans are only accepted if empty or dry. Kitty litter or oil dry can be used to dry up unused paint.

Moving? Recycling bins are the property of the City. Please leave the recycling bin for the next resident. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Holiday Schedule: Waste Management only observes the following holidays. When your pickup falls on or after one of these days holidays, your pickup will be one day late during the week.

2 Easy Steps To Bin Recycling
Follow these simple instructions in preparing your materials for recycling.
NEWSPAPERS, NEWSPRINT, and MIXED PAPER PRODUCTS STEP

Step #1
Various types of low grade mixed papers are acceptable, including:

  • CARDBOARD BOXES - We request flattened and cut down to 2 foot in diameter or less.
  • CHIPBOARD BOXES - cereal boxes, shoe boxes, paper tubes, soda/beer cartons.
  • BROWN PAPER GROCERY BAGS
  • PHONE BOOKS and MAGAZINES
  • MIXED HOUSEHOLD PAPERS Including used mail.

NOTE: On windy days, you can place paper products in a brown kraft bag to reduce litter.

Step #2
CONTAINERS AND OTHER MATERIALS
A variety of different types of containers will all be accepted for recycling, including:

  • GLASS JARS & BOTTLES - Food and beverage containers - clear, green, blue, brown. Does NOT include… Window or plate glass, dishes, ceramics or Pyrex, bulbs, etc.
  • ALUMINUM / METAL CANS - Food and beverage cans, aluminum, steel, metal, and aluminum foil and pie tins.
    • PLASTIC FOOD GRADE CONTAINERS
    • PET – 2-liter or other size beverage containers.
    • HDPE – Milk and water jugs, laundry, and household detergent bottles.
    • PVC – Vegetable oil bottles, window cleaner and detergent bottles.
    • LDPE – Other food grade bottles.
    • PP – Yogurt cups and syrup bottles.
    • – Other plastic food containers.

(Look for the recycling symbols shown above, acceptable bottles will have one of these #’s on the bottom.) Polystyrene (carry-out containers) is no longer accepted. Bottles that contained motor oil, pesticides, or chemicals will NOT be accepted.

PREPARATION: All containers in Step #2 can be mixed in your plastic recycling bin. Please place the items from Step #1 on top. All items should be rinsed and the caps removed and discarded. Containers may be flattened to reduce volume. Plastic grocery bags are usually accepted at grocery stores.

Place your recycling bin at the curb on your regular pickup day. It’s that easy!! Recycling will be collected on the same day as refuse, but at different times of the day.
