Mark Baker

Mark Baker was appointed to the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission in October 1995 and currently serves as the Chairman for the commission. He has experience in old house restoration/renovation and woodworking. He also is involved in various activities with the St. Pats neighborhood, which is one of Joliet's oldest neighborhoods. Mark has spent his time with the commission learning about historic preservation by attending conferences and seminars. While meeting with resident of neighborhoods, Mark has discussed the advantages of historic preservation and the benefits that come along with it.

Harold J. Carlson

Hal Carlson is a principal in the architectural firm of Russ + Carlson. He has 30 years of experience that encompasses almost all facets of the practice, with a particular interest in historic preservation and renovation. Appointed to the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission in 1994, Hal has served as Chairperson in 1996 and 1997. Hal has also been involved with the New Museum Steering Committee for the Joliet Area Historical Society and is a board member on the Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commissions.

P. Seth Magosky

P. Seth Magosky is a fourth-generation resident of Joliet. His love of history and passion for Joliet's architectural environment goes back 20 years to his junior high days. He was active with the Joliet Historical Society for many years, then turned his attention to the Historic Preservation Commission at it inception point. As one of the original members, Seth has served on the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission for some 8 years. He is well versed in architectural styles and local history, and has worked extensively with landmark and district nomination processes. Seth studied History of Architecture and Art at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Today he resides in the Historic Benjamin Pickles home, and is actively restoring it.

Sharon Merwin

Sharon Merwin has lived in the Joliet Area for about 15 years and resides in and older home in the Raynor North area. She is also one of the original Joliet Historic Preservation Commissioners, focusing her efforts on Community Awareness and Education about historic preservation. She has also served as the Vice-Chairperson of Commission. Her background as Information Manager at Ameritech assisted the Commission in establishing the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission Website.

Robert Nachtrieb

Robert Nachtrieb, a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer, moved to Joliet from the Washington D.C. area in 1995. He and his wife Linda grew up in Palos Park, came to the Rialto in the early 1960s on dates before they were married, and moved east in 1967. They are now renovating an old house in the Cathedral Area. Bob has been on the Historic Preservation Commission since 1997, and has been actively involved in establishing the Upper Bluff Local Historic District. Bob was instrumental in planning the sidewalk tile project in conjunction with the City of Joliet Public Works Department.

Barb Newberg

Barbara Newburg is a Planner II with the City of Joliet since 1985 and has served as the Secretary to the Historic Preservation Commission since its inception in 1991. She has also been involved with the Architectural Design Committee and Economic Development in the City Center, zoning ordinance and subdivision administration and the city’s monthly property improvement program.

Gregory Spiess

Having grown up in Will County, Greg Spiess is knowledgeable about local history. But he is an expert in architectural antiques, stained glass, and building materials, as has operated a restoration business for 22 years in Joliet on Washington Street. Greg has served on the commission for about 6 years, and is experienced in the everyday happenings of living and working in older historic neighborhoods and commercial districts.
